EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The Information Technology department is using technology replacement server funds to update the hardware that allows the city to continue providing virtual servers running in a single environment. The hyperconverged product provided by VMware pools together storage, computer, and network connectivity to create a distributed data center.  The physical hardware is capable of running multiple virtual environments or servers optimizing memory and processor usage.  Virtual servers can also be easily replicated and backed up to ensure data integrity and security.  The City currently maintains two virtual hosting environments, one at City Hall and one at the Police department.  The two environments support nearly 250 distinct virtual servers.  The useful life and warranty of the physical hardware has been exceeded and requires replacement to maintain continuity of service and avoid potential disruption.

This purchase is for:

  • 4x Servers to be provided at City Hall that will contain approximately 249 virtual servers
  • 4x Servers to be provided as a failover and non-production environment at the Police Department

All equipment will be purchased from Tanches, under the cooperative contract of the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR), contract # DIR-TSO-3763. Funds for this purchase are budgeted in the Technology Replacement Fund.
