Article II, Section 2.01 of the Charter of the City of Sugar Land provides for a council containing four members elected from single-member districts, two members of the council elected at large, and a mayor elected at large.
The recently released 2020 U.S. Census shows that the populations between the four single-member districts vary by greater than 10%. To maintain comparative representation within each Single-Member Council District, the districts must be redistricted prior to the 2024 single-member district election to ensure district populations are proportional and residents receive equal representation from the City Council.
The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the proposed timing of redistricting, as well as the process which will be utilized to complete the redistricting of the City's Single Member Council Districts. Elements of the redistricting process to be discussed during this workshop include:
- Methods of Redistricting
- Process of Redistricting
- Recommended Timeline of Redistricting
