Groundwater operators check water quality and plant equipment at the City’s water plants daily. In May of 2023, one of the four Greatwood water wells failed to run. Outside contractors confirmed that the failure was not caused by the motor but the submersible well pump.
Staff contacted Alsay Incorporated to pull the well pump for inspection. Alsay Incorporated specializes in well drilling and repair and was the contractor that rehabilitated the well back in 2020. Alsay pulled the pump and televised the well shaft to check for damage. City staff received the inspection report from Alsay in June 2023. Based on the extent of damage, Alsay recommended the City replace the pump and portions of the shaft.
Alsay originally anticipated a lead time of 8-9 weeks for the new pump equipment to arrive, which was mid-to late August. Although the other three Greatwood water wells were operating normally, staff realized the importance of having all wells operational in the summer months. For that reason, staff requested Alsay provide a rental pump until the new pump arrived.
As a result of material and part delays, delivery of the new pump has been pushed back to early-December. The delay prolonged the pump rental period; however, Alsay agreed to honor its original two-month rental quote.
Funds are available in the FY24 Water Production operations budget to pay for the emergency pump repair and rental. The replacement costs are summarized below:
