AGENDA REQUEST NO:

AGENDA OF: City Council Meeting

INITIATED BY: Tia Moore, Deputy City Secretary

PRESENTED BY:

Joe Zimmerman, Mayor

RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT: City Secretary

AGENDA CAPTION:

DR. JAMES COX

26 YEARS OF SERVICE

ANIMAL ADVISORY BOARD

RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Recognize Dr. James Cox for his 26 years of service on the Animal Advisory Board.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The City and staff would like to recognize Dr. James Cox for his 26 years of service on the City of Sugar Land Animal Advisory Board (AAB).

As chair of the AAB, Dr. Cox has been instrumental in leading the board through change over the years, including opening the City’s first indoor shelter, approval of the 2019 GO Bond for a new animal shelter, and everything in between. His knowledge and expertise helped guide the City to provide compassionate, high-quality care to the animals coming into the shelter, facilitate educational community engagement opportunities, and serve as a trailblazing municipal shelter that inspires others.

  • In 2008, the City built our first indoor animal shelter.
  • Dr. Cox participated in and led the AAB through the 2016 animal shelter expansion study, which developed facility expansion options and recommended interim improvements to the existing animal shelter. With the annexation of Greatwood and New Territory in December 2017, a temporary expansion of the current animal shelter was completed through the addition of an existing building that was renovated and relocated to the shelter, increasing the floor space by 56 percent.
  •  Sugar Land voters approved the $6.6 million on Nov. 5, 2019, to fund the design and construction of a new animal shelter to address projected animal capacity from the City’s growth. The construction of a new animal shelter was expected to address projected growth through 2030 and house a total of 70 dogs and 132 cats at any given time.
