PRESENTED BY: Kayla Lauhoff, Community Engagement Coordinator

RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT: City Manager

AGENDA CAPTION:
Serve Sugar Land Volunteers
Volunteer of the Year Award
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Recognize Serve Sugar Land Volunteers and Award the Volunteer of the Year.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Serve Sugar Land began in 2007, as a way for the citizens of Sugar Land and surrounding neighborhoods to become involved in their city government through volunteerism. In 2017, over 931 volunteers contributed over 27,115 hours of service to the city equaling over $654,556 in in-kind service donations. They assisted throughout the City - at the Police and Fire Departments, Animal Shelter, T.E. Harman Senior Center, Municipal Court and here in City Hall Departments.

The City is hosting a volunteer appreciation event on June 28th and July 19th with an evening at Constellation Field for a Sugar Land Skeeter's ballgame to recognize and thank the volunteers who participated in the program.

Each year, City Departments are asked to nominate and select a volunteer who enhanced the delivery of City services by sharing their skills and positive outlook, and fostering an atmosphere of community within the City of Sugar Land.

This year’s special recognition went to ten individuals, who were nominated by the City Department where they have volunteered as their Department’s Volunteer of the Year. This year’s Departmental Volunteers of the Year are:

  • Becky Adams; Accounting
  • Jack Bich; T.E. Harman Center
  • Patrick Bourque; Permits and Inspections
  • Brenda Frye; Municipal Court
  • Cheryl Harris; Animal Shelter
  • Ellen Hickmon and Trudy Thompson; Human Resources
  • Elizabeth Paul; Police Department
  • Annette Shinsky; Citizens Fire Academy Alumni Association (CFAAA)
  • Dave Sullivan; CAST

The City's Executive Team met with the City's Community Engagement Division to select one of these outstanding individuals as the overall 2017 City of Sugar Land Volunteer of the Year, who will be announced this evening.

With the help of these and hundreds of additional volunteers, the City is able to further expand and enhance the services it offers its citizens.
