The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) recognize the importance of protecting and preserving our environment.
The first Earth Day was organized in 1970 in several major US cities to promote the ideas of ecology, encourage respect for life on earth, and highlight growing concern over pollution of soil, air, and water. Earth Day is now observed in nearly 200 nations with outdoor performances, exhibits, street fairs, and celebrations that focus on environmental issues. It is noted as one of the largest civic events recognized across the world.
By adopting environmentally conscientious habits in our daily lives, our community is bringing about a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment. The City is committed to increasing recycling and environmental awareness. As evidence of this commitment, the City’s diversion rate has made significant strides over the past few years and for FY17 it reached 40%. We hope our diversion rate continues to rise with the dedicated recycling efforts of our residents and business community. The City and KSLB celebrates environmental awareness this year as we will have a performer, named Steve Trash, speak to the children in the schools about recycling and the affect it has on the Earth. The City will continue to promote environmental habits by developing educational pieces, which will be available on the website and social media.
The City and KSLB encourage the community to attend the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rock event, which will be held Saturday, April 14, 2018, in Sugar Land’s Town Square Plaza from 3-7 PM. The event will celebrate Earth Day with live performances by Vocal Trash, Reptile shows by Texas Snakes, Nutty Scientist, and Nature and Eclectic Outdoors. Paper shredding will also be provided at no cost in the City Hall parking lot.
The Environmental and Neighborhood Services Department and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful request that the Mayor and City Council proclaim April 14, 2018, as Earth Day in the City of Sugar Land.
