Sugar Land 101 began in 2004 as a means to familiarize citizens with the structure, function, and purpose of Sugar Land City government, and to equip and encourage them to assume a leadership role within the community. This 2018 class is the City’s 16th Sugar Land 101 citizen academy.
Applicants were selected to represent a diverse group considering geography, ethnicity, gender, age and profession. This year’s Sugar Land 101 class included 17 participants which began meeting in January and completed the 10-week program April 9th.
The class curriculum includes three themes: 1) the City as a Government Entity, 2) the City as a Leader in Community Development, and 3) the City as a Service Provider, both internal and external. Included in the program were two tours focusing on community development and city services, as well as a mock City Council meeting. Participants provided evaluations after each class and tour and ended with a Mock City Council session utilizing all of the knowledge they have gained over the past months.
Members of Sugar Land 101 Class of 2018 committed their Monday evenings for 10 weeks to learning more about their city and now are better educated about how their City government works and are encouraged to become even more active in their community, as a result.
Family and friends of SL 101 Class of 2018 members honored them by attending their graduation earlier this evening.
Staff would like to ask the City Council to recognize the members of the Sugar Land 101 Class of 2018.
Special thanks to all of the City Staff who served as instructors, tour guides and support during the Class of 2018 and another very successful program.
