EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Information Technology Department is requesting authorization to purchase replacement computer equipment as per this year’s technology replacement program. A policy exists that provides a funding source and guidelines for the replacement of obsolete technology equipment to minimize cost and to provide effective, dependable equipment. An evaluation of all equipment has been made and this request represents items that have exceeded their useful life or are no longer providing reliable service.

(18) VPP L4 VMware vSAN 6 Enterprise for 1 processor = $56,395.05

(18) Support subscriptions for VMware vSAN processors above = $24,845.06

Additional discounts included for packaging $1,240.11.

This software licensing will allow us to use virtual storage in our VMware environment. This agenda request is to purchase licenses and support that will allow for virtual storage in our environment from Unique Digital for $80,000.

The Information Technology department is using the Technology replacement server funds to purchase vSAN licenses to integrate the vSAN ready servers. Virtual Storage Area Network (vSAN) is a hypervisor converged storage product provided by VMware that pools together storage devices across a VMware environment to create a distributed data center. These licenses allow the data consumed by the city to be replicated to multiple machines in the environment to ensure data integrity and security. This licensing package allows for better management of the storage, cheaper cost of storage, and superior overall performance through vSAN ready servers. This combination of licensing and storage provides the fastest storage technology available in a way that provides the City future expansion.

All equipment will be purchased from Unique Digital, under the cooperative contract of the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR), contract # DIR-TSO-3926. Funds for this purchase are budgeted in the Technology Replacement Fund. Staff recommends the purchase of this replacement equipment.
