INITIATED BY: Colt Yorek, PLA, Streetscape Supervisor

PRESENTED BY: Colt Yorek, Streetscape Supervisor

RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT: Public Works

AGENDA CAPTION:
ARBOR DAY
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Proclaim November 3, 2018, as Arbor Day in the City of Sugar Land
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) are supporting Arbor Day by proclaiming November 3, 2018 as Arbor Day in Sugar Land. In 2018, the City of Sugar Land Public Works and Parks Departments planted 17 trees and 150 seedlings within the City Right-of-Ways and City Parks.

Arbor Day began in 1872, when J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.

On November 3, 2018, the City and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) will hold the twelfth-annual “Trees Across Sugar Land” event, and will plant and mulch trees in the City’s Brazos River Park.

The City of Sugar Land has achieved Tree City USA status consecutively since 2011, and has met the four standards established by The Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. These standards are that the City has:

  • A Tree Board or Department
  • A Tree Care Ordinance
  • A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita
  • An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation

The Public Works Department and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful request that the City Council proclaim November 3, 2018 as Arbor Day in the City of Sugar Land.
