The City of Sugar Land seeks grant opportunities whenever they are available to supplement City funding with state or federal funds. Grants usually require a match of City funds and a resolution of the City Council authorizing the application for the grant and designating an official to sign grant documents.
This is the seventh year of the city’s participation in the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) process. The purpose of the EMPG is to provide federal funds to states to assist in preparing for all hazards. In the past 6 years, the City of Sugar Land has used this funding to assist with the planning and organizing of our programs, as well as trainings and exercises that include the entire staff and community.
Identifying our security challenges, in addition to responding to the multiple natural disasters, is what defines us to be prepared for such diverse and complicated events. The Emergency Management staff have lead exercises in active shooters scenarios, hurricane preparedness, animal sheltering, hospital baby abduction, exercises with LIDs and HazMat events, and Disaster Finance Recovery.
The 2019 priority for EMPG funding is to advance “Whole Community” Security and Emergency Management. Grant funds will be used to support local comprehensive emergency management programs to encourage improvement of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery capabilities for all hazards. In the six years prior, the City has received a total of $239,585.83 in grant funding.
Staff recommends the City Council approve Resolution No. 18-45 authorizing the application for the FY19 Emergency Management Performance Grant.
