RECOGNITION OF 43 YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Recognize First Assistant City Manager Steve Griffith for his years of service to the City.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
A Houston-area native, Steve Griffith began his public service career with the University of Houston-Central as a patrol officer in 1976. He progressed in his law enforcement career with the City of Bellaire as a senior patrol officer, patrol sergeant, lieutenant, then captain, until receiving the opportunity to serve as the Chief of Police in the City of West University Place, where he served for over 10 years. Following this, he became the Chief of Police for the City of San Marcos, where he was instrumental in the design of the ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) Project and served as Executive Director until 2005, at which time he moved to Sugar Land to serve as Chief of Police. Steve's leadership in the Sugar Land Police Department resulted in numerous departmental distinctions, including the City's selection as America's Fifth Safest City in 2007. In addition, from 2005-2007, the City experienced a 16.7% drop in crime rate.

Steve earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Management from Sam Houston State University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the public executive institute at the University of Texas Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs. Griffith holds a master peace officer and Instructor certificate and served as an adjunct criminal justice instructor at Texas State University. He is a member of the International Association of Chief of Police, the Texas Police Chief’s Association, Texas Police Association, and Harris County Area Chief of Police Association. In late 2007, Griffith accepted a request by Governor Rick Perry to serve as a Commissioner on the Board of Commissioners for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).

Steve is also highly involved in the community. He has served on the Board of the Fort Bend Council on Substance Abuse and the Sugar Land Exchange Club, where he served as president in 2011-2012. His involvement with Special Olympics Texas has spanned for over 25 years. During his tenure, he worked to integrate the state prison system into the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and generated $2 million annually for the Texas Torch Runners. The Texas Torch Run received national awards for revenue growth and totals. Steve has served on the SOTX Board of Directors for over 10 years, which includes his current (second-term) position as Chair.

His exceptional performance in Sugar Land and the community led him to be offered an interim Assistant City Manager promotion in 2009, which was made permanent later that year. Steve served in this leadership role until he was promoted further to First Assistant City Manager in 2014.

Steve is committed to community partnerships and is a champion of leadership development and accountability. Throughout his career, he has focused on innovation, cultivating talent, rewarding hard work, and retaining quality staff. To date, Steve has dedicated an incredible 43 years to public service including 13 1/2 years in Sugar Land.

Staff would like to recognize Steve for his exceptional service and wish him the best in his retirement.
