The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the Sugar Land Police Department the 2018 STEP Comprehensive Grant (STEP Speed Grant) in the amount of $80,110.65 to pay for overtime enforcement of speed and intersection traffic control within the City of Sugar Land. Per the grant agreement, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will reimburse $59,996.33, which is 74.89% of the total grant amount. The City match requirement is $20,114.32, which is 25.11% of the total grant award.
The purpose of the 2018 STEP Speed Grant is to increase speed enforcement by reinforcing traffic safety laws to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries. The enforcement duties are assigned largely to the traffic unit, with assistance from patrol officers, sergeants and lieutenants when needed. The STEP Speed Grant is a year-long grant beginning October 1, 2017 ending September 30, 2018, or on the date the grant agreement is fully executed by both parties, namely, the City of Sugar Land and TxDOT.
The Police Department recommends City Council approve Resolution No. 17-30, accept the 2018 STEP Comprehensive Grant award totaling $80,110.65, approve a budget adjustment of $59,995.98 to revenues and $80,110.65 to expenditures and appoint Chief Douglas Brinkley as the authorized grant official.
