RESPONSIBLE DEPARTMENT: Environmental and Neighborhood Services

AGENDA CAPTION:
National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Proclaim November 5-11, 2017 as National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week in the City of Sugar Land.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Each year, the Humane Society of the United States celebrates National Animal Shelter Appreciation week during the first full week of November, as a way to honor animal shelters and the dedicated people who work to protect animals.

There are approximately 3,500 Animal Shelters across the United States. Animal shelters are vital resources for their communities. A shelter is a safe haven for animals, and a great place to adopt a new family pet. Shelters also provide critical services such as investigating cruelty and neglect, reuniting lost pets with their families, and teaching kids to care about animals.

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is a perfect opportunity for our residents, their families and our community to become acquainted with our shelter. Over time, the City of Sugar Land has made dramatic improvements to our Animal Control function. Ten years ago, our animal shelter consisted of two portable buildings and several outdoor animal enclosures. In 2008, we built a state of the art animal facility which allowed us to provide dedicated space for staff and air conditioned enclosures for animals. This last budget year, the City moved an existing building to the Animal Shelter location which has been converted to air conditioned space dedicated to felines. The addition of a structure and the subsequent reconfiguration of space has allowed the City to meet needs for our current animal population and to provide space for the animals collected from our newest neighborhoods in Greatwood and New Territory.

The Environmental & Neighborhood Services Department requests that the City Council proclaim November 5-11, 2017, as National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
